#warpaintband piece part 2, "the colors of warpaint," up now, just in time to celebrate a raucous 15th anniversary. If only I could have been there, alas, France. Read here: https://thefriedneckbones.net/2019/02/06/the-colors-of-warpaint-part-ii/ PC: @eliduke
Surprise #recordofthewhenever ? Why not! @andre_wow_ens24 and I visited Les Abattoirs in Toulouse in January and were treated to a vinyl exposition including #SonicYouth, #PattySmith, #TheClash, #Radiohead and more! In particular, it was Sonic Youth's record Sonic Nurse (2004) on the turntable, a highlight in their back catalog, and a sorta-kinda-maybe return to form record depending on how felt you about their forays into experimental and post rock led by #ThurstonMoore. It features #KimGordon back in the songwriting and vocal mix and I'mma be honest, this is my favorite #SonicYouth record for exactly those reasons. She's a fucking monster on that bass and I love it when the inner wild thing comes out.
You may ask why it took until February to make #TheOnlyListYouNeed 2018 edition. Well, it's like the Super Bowl or the Grammys: arbitrary, too loud for its own good and yet an entirely necessary circle jerk. Il neige, il neige, enfin il neige !
I wrote many words in the first part of two articles about the career of #warpaint because... well why not? It is nearly their birthday after all! Read here: https://thefriedneckbones.net/2019/01/23/the-colors-of-warpaint-part-i/ PC: @miakirby

How To Be A Human Being: The Glass Animals Way!

BenJamsToo November 11, 2016

The Sophomore Slump? How in the hell does a band follow a debut like Zaba? Where does one go after taking listeners for a ride down the Amazon? If you have these questions, then Glass Animals would like to invite you to a change of scene with How To Be A Human Being. I didn’t think they could do it, but, slowly and gently, Glass Animals takes the listener from the depths of the Amazon to a suburban Sahara. The key here …

xx: Album of the Decade

BenJamsToo October 3, 2016

Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, Baria Qureshi and Jamie Smith are tired and heartbroken with a guitar, a bass, a keyboard and a drum machine. They stay low-key, happiness is merely a flutter in the heart.

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs: Clapton’s Magnum Opus

BenJamsToo September 27, 2016

For 77 minutes, Clapton’s alchemical guitar work is at its absolute peak as he explores themes of unrequited love, singing, playing and pleading to find a way to Layla’s heart.

The 1975: The title of their second album is longer than this heading. Seriously.

BenJamsToo September 1, 2016

I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It is a long ass title. But hey, I’m not complaining. Especially not when the product sounds like the love child of Prince and the xx. Yep, the 1975 manage to somehow combine the Minneapolis sound with minimalist millennial methods to create one of the most heart-wrenching dance experiences of 2016. Fuck that, one of the most heart-wrenching dance experiences of my life is more like it. I don’t …

Fleetwood Mac (1975): The Crystal Album

BenJamsToo August 29, 2016

In 1974, Fleetwood Mac was considered a blues-band past its prime, struggling to find a good rhythm since the departures of Peter Green, Danny Kirwan and Bob Welch. In dire straights, Mick Fleetwood found a northern Californian couple and invited them to reinvigorate a tired and tested band. The resulting quintet is probably one of the most well known line-ups in rock history: Mick Fleetwood on drums, John McVie on bass, Christine McVie on piano and keyboards, Lindsey Buckingham on …
