Quick Impressions

Field Division – Dark Matter Dreams
Producer: Field Division, McKenzie Smith
Label: Bella Union
Genre: Psychedelic Folk, Dream Rock
Quick Impressions:
Immense credit given to Field Division for creating a psychedelic folk record and folk-rock record at the same time without delving to hard into dreampop and removing most of the zing from the record. They sound every bit as convincing as First Aid Kit without steering into an overbearingly dreary yet punchy zone. They instead made a soothing road trip record perfect for the flat and straight routes of the Midwest.
Spotify

Galcher Lustwerk – 200% GALCHER
Producer: Galcher Lustwerk
Label: Self-Released
Genre: Dance, Deep House
Quick Impressions:
Deep House might be the cheesiest electronic genre out there—but damn if this record doesn’t float like a Pelardon and cut like a Brie. I’ll show myself out.
Spotify

Isla Craig – The Becoming
Producer: Prince Nifty
Label: Pleasence
Genre: Singer-Songwriter, Psychedelic Soul, Trip Hop
Quick Impressions:
Isla Craig’s debut is a psychedelic soul experience wrapped in the folky trappings of singer-songwriter catechisms. It sounds like psychedelic folk, sure, but by mid-album the cuts begin to ooze together like butter and drip like… well this is the second record of three now to get me thinking in dairy-based buffoonery of a literary nature. Oy vey. It’s a very subtle effect of the bass, pitter-patter synthesizers and Craig’s voice warbling and shining across a soft, living room sound akin to Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple or a later-era Kate Bush, even. To say the least, I like records that hit the spot and leave me with a slight hunger for a little more and I find this record thusly tastes of a strawberry rhubarb cobbler.
Spotify

Lumerians – Call Of The Void
Producer:
Label: Fuzz Club
Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Neo-Psychedelia
Quick Impressions: Many may wonder what the hell the difference between psychedelic rock and neo-psychedelia may mean and they’d be right to question that: it seems utterly pedantic—well I’m a pedant here to explain: Psychedelic rock is brainbusting rock no matter what decade or whose garage it is made. Neo-Psychedelia is the exploration of psychedelic rock crossing electronic and analog spheres. Think “new wave” for psychedelic rock whereas popular psychedelic rock daren’t tread far and hypnagogic gets almost too baked. It’s a dicey number to wire a subtle record. And the Lumerians skirt that telephone line like a band trying to hire a hitman—just so they can kill their own record. But don’t think Call of the Void can’t fight back, there may be no punch to this record—but it is a series of blessing jabs to give away to Eastern chakra synths, cowbell percussion and roving, roaming guitars bookending Luciferian organs on parade. By albums end the hitman should turn around—there’s too much hidden weapons on this record to be bad.

The Pauses – Unbuilding
Producer: J. Robbins
Label: Self-Released
Genre: Indie Rock, Indietronica
Quick Impressions:
Indietronica? Minimal at best—the Pauses Facebook about page says as much: beep boop rock. It’s also a true clunker—which means while the middle section of the record leaves one wanting (tighter songwriting or less chug-a-chug-a-choo-choo rhythms, you pick)—the linings are all silver. Or whatever paint shines the most like silver. Tierney’s voice doesn’t strain as hard and Jason Kupfer and Nathan Chase don’t sound as lost when playing on “Don’t Wake Me Up,” “Digital Detox,” “The Means” and “Heart of the Steal.” Overall though, the instruments are too immediate to be shoegaze and Tierney’s vocals too disinterested to be punk. This means the music struggles to just be a simple power garage album without letting the indietronica detours turn into full-blown countryside rambles.

The Record Company – All Of This Life
Producer: Alex Stiff
Label: Concord
Genre: Roots Rock
Quick Impressions:
The Record Company… as in the Band right? Is this some subtle step to eclipse what came before? Not a mockery, no, no, but an homage that also thrusts forward a music that sounds sorta new with garage sensibilities but also stay firmly rooted to the blues. In other words, exactly like the Black Keys. They do a good job that—actually, better than they do of emulating the Band. They have their steamdriver Chicago and Delta blues moments too along the record, so they haven’t forgotten anything for go-around numbah two. In all senses of the word they have distilled a record that stands up to any of the early Keys’ stuff—but I’m waiting for the genres to overtake the individual artist influences.

Soulwax – Essential
Producer: David Dewaele, Stephen Dewaele
Label: DEEWEE
Genre: Electro House, Electro Swing
Quick Impressions:
The assortment of synths along this record is delightful, the vibes are consistent, the sounds are eclectic and the Soulwax brothers keep on bumpin’. A much more alive mood record than Lustwerk’s 200% GALCHER (which is not a bad album by any means), the record revolves around the conceit of the essential and what that means for making music. One thing comes to mind: rock-solid rhythm. And this record has it in spades, even if it sounds like the robot butler from Rocky IV is attempting to DJ from his personal music library.
Spotify

Stella Donnelly – Thrush Metal EP
Producer: Jordan Shakespeare
Label: Secretly Canadian
Genre: Singer-Songwriter
Quick Impressions:
Stella Donnelly hides her voice well, but by “Talking’s” end, we find ourselves o-mouthed at the pipes that this Australian singer-songwriter soaked in reverb. She could fill out a concert hall nicely with her sparse, chamber music sound and reaching vocal chords—like a child’s paw looking for a mystical cookie jar on the shelf. Magically, her hand finds the pastry pot.

Why Bonnie – Nightgown EP
Producer: Joey Oxaca
Label: Sports Day
Genre: lofi, Twee, Neo-Beach
Quick Impressions:
An infuriating situation: play pretty well and yet still have a rando ask “Is it possible for someone to achieve more chill than Chastity Belt on “What the Hell?” This isn’t about me; I’m just asking for a band of a band.
Spotify

Yazmin Lacey – When The Sun Dips 90 Degrees EP
Producer: Pete Beardsworth
Label: First World
Genre: Neo-Soul
Quick Impressions:
Yazmin Lacey’s voice is gentle, the soul production of Pete Beardsworth belies a club-soul of Cleveland or New York or even Philedelphia circa ’74. Jazzy breeziness lifts the sails of an EP which sailed across the pond and into a pair of speakers. Everything is rose and honey like an Isley Brothers or Curtis Mayfield record of old. At this point, all one needs is a field, a boombox, a sky of morphing clouds and a tree for shade. Yazmin Lacey, Kadhja Bonet and Jorja Smith just made the last three weeks something lovely for anyone in need of cloudwatching companions.
